Silver Fern Farms has released its 2025 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Inventory, reinforcing its ongoing commitment to transparent climate reporting.
The latest inventory reports a 2% reduction in total emissions compared with 2024, and an 18% reduction against the 2021 base year. Scope 1 and 2 emissions are down 25.6%, led by the Belfast processing site, which transitioned to no coal use during the year.
This year’s inventory also strengthens reporting, with an expanded Scope 3 boundary, a recalculated base year, and more granular Life Cycle Assessment data that better reflects emissions across the full value chain.
On-farm Scope 3 emissions remain a major focus and represent by far the largest part of Silver Fern Farms’ climate impact. Through its investment in AgriZero NZ, Silver Fern Farms is backing practical, science-based solutions that can support farmers to reduce emissions. To succeed at scale, these solutions will need to be linked to market value while continuing to improve animal productivity and farm resilience. Silver Fern Farms Co-operative Ltd’s leadership and support and strong supplier relationships will be critical to enabling meaningful reductions in Scope 3 emissions.
Silver Fern Farms is also increasing its focus on real farm data and data quality, building the evidence base needed to demonstrate the progress farmers are already making through improved pasture utilisation, stock growth rates, and emissions intensity improvements.
The inventory highlights the important role commercial partnerships can play in cutting supply chain emissions. Work with M2X and Kotahi is helping optimise transport routes and support stable access to ocean freight, contributing to measurable changes in off-farm Scope 3 emissions. This is supported by considerable progress in reducing waste to landfill, including a reduction of more than 90% in organic waste.
Silver Fern Farms’ Chief Sustainability and Risk Officer, Kate Beddoe, says the inventory is about more than measurement.
“Understanding our emissions profile, further strengthening the integrity of our data, and acting where we practically can are all essential to bringing our climate commitments to life and meeting what our customers want now and into the future,” Beddoe says.
All emissions reported in the inventory have been independently certified by Toitū Envirocare, providing confidence in the quality and credibility of the data.
The 2025 GHG Inventory supports Silver Fern Farms’ broader nature positive ambition and its focus on building enduring value for suppliers, customers, and the landscapes on which the business depends.
