Managing Wastewater at Our Pareora Site

At our Pareora site, we follow a carefully managed and consented process for wastewater treatment. Since 2008, we have reduced the amount of wastewater discharged to the sea by approximately 55%. This has been achieved by repurposing wastewater as fertiliser for nearby farmland and implementing measures to reduce overall water usage on-site.

We prioritise discharging to farmland, where it acts as a fertiliser to help grow grass. However, during periods when the land is too wet for example, we must discharge wastewater to the sea. Both land and sea discharges are fully consented and approved by the local regulatory body, with our consents renewed in 2022 after a comprehensive expert review. We also conduct marine environment sampling to monitor any potential impacts.

The wastewater primarily consists of organic material that is biodegradable. While our current processes meet regulatory standards, we are committed to continuous improvement.

Transparency and environmental responsibility remain a priority for us, and we will continue working towards reducing our environmental impact while keeping you informed.
